While Nags Head isn’t a whale-watching destination like New England, we do, every now and then, spot a whale in the distance. And unfortunately, we do have whales wash ashore. Typically your chances of seeing a whale are higher in December or January, as whales swim down toward the Caribbean to give birth.
Nags Head typically sees Humpback Whales. Humpbacks are typically 40-50 feet and 33-40 tons. As big as they are, they leap out of the water! Another member of the whale family seen often in Nags Head is the dolphin.
So how do you see one of these majestic creatures? Folks seem to have better luck seeing them on a boat or out at the end of Jeanette’s Pier. And there is a great whale tracking app you can download from whalealert.org. Whale Alert is a global initiative to reduce ship strikes and other human activities that threaten marine mammals. Hope you spot one!
